The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Abbas Tajudeen, has emphasized the need for urgent action to address the increasing cases of drug abuse and domestic violence in Nigeria’s northwestern region.
Dr Abbass spoke at the launch of a sensitization campaign against drug abuse and domestic violence in the north-west zone, with the theme “Stop drug abuse and domestic violence in our communities” organized in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency, NOA.
He stressed that eradicating drug abuse and domestic violence requires collective effort beyond government’s intervention alone.
The Speaker cited alarming statistics, including a 25% rise in drug abuse in the North-West over the past three years and a 28% increase in drug seizures in Kaduna State in 2023.
He also noted that nearly 35% of women nationwide have experienced domestic violence, with the situation being even more dire in the North-West.
Dr Abbas announced that his office would work closely with the NOA, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and other stakeholders to engage directly with communities and traditional rulers.
He emphasized the importance of educating citizens about the dangers of drug abuse and domestic violence and fostering preventative measures and support services.
“The government has taken steps to address these challenges, including increasing funding for the NDLEA, providing modern tools and training, and launching initiatives to expand rehabilitation centres and community-based outreach programs. However, community leaders must also play a crucial role in rejecting drug abuse and domestic violence. ”
The Chairman of NDLEA, Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa, and the Director-General of NOA, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the need for collective action to address these challenges.
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State highlighted the importance of addressing the abuse of over-the-counter drugs, in addition to hard drugs.
