Reduce Reliance On Govt In Funding Education – Speaker

todayFebruary 23, 2025

Background

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Abbas Tajudeen, has advocated a reduction in reliance on government funding for education in Nigeria.

Instead, he proposes exploring alternative sources of funds, including Public Private Partnership (PPPs) and endowment funds.

Speaking at the 31st and 32nd Annual General Meeting of the Zaria Education Development Association, ZEDA in Zaria, Kaduna State, the Speaker emphasized the importance of diversifying funding streams, citing successful models in countries such as Denmark and Ireland, which have achieved long-term, sustainable growth in the education sector through diversified funding.

In a statement by his Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Musa Abdullahi, the Speaker also stressed the need for human capital development, highlighting the progress achieved by countries like Japan, Singapore, and Ireland through investments in education, training, and innovation.

He noted that Nigeria, with its vast natural resources, must prioritize the development of its people to realize its full potential.

In addition, Speaker Abbas commended Governor Uba Sani’s administration in Kaduna State for reducing the number of out-of-school children through the construction of new secondary schools.

He also emphasized the importance of integrating technology to transform the education sector, citing successful models from the United Kingdom and Singapore.

The House of Representatives, under Speaker Abbas’ leadership, remains committed to advancing universal basic education, enhancing secondary and technical education, and integrating innovative reforms to address current and future challenges.
