The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has restated commitment to empower ten million women across various sectors of the economy by 2028 for financial independence.
The Minister of Women Affairs and social development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman -Ibrahim who made the call at the commissioning of the Karmo District Market, in Abuja said plans were underway to address the issues of women selling by the road side under harsh conditions to earn a living.
Hajiya Imaan said providing a designated and proper trading space will guarantee women’s safety, dignity, and access to better customer base to carry out their businesses without barrier in line with President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.
“The market is an institution put in place not just as a structure but for economic empowerment of women for financial independence.”
“Nigerian women constitute a large percentage of the population where 70% are among the rural farmers.The Ministry of women affairs will support the women to own stores in the market.”

Earlier, Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike represented by the Minister of state, FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud said the project is a commitment of the FCT administration towards fostering economic growth, promoting trade and commerce in the territory and environs.
Dr Mariya stated that the Karmo Modern Market has over two thousand five hundred shops to meet all categories of goods and services for residents.
The FCT Minister of State added that the market would also help to boost commercial activities in the area, and create jobs for the teaming youths to enhance their livelihood.
“The market is the heartbeat of every community, not just for buying and selling but representing the strength of our local economy and the resilience of our people and serving as a commercial hub for business activities”.
The Chairman, Rural Homes limited Mallam Musa Dangogo Aliu said the careful planning and inclusive execution of the market created over 5,000 jobs during the construction and anticipates 10,000 jobs if fully operational to benefit the community.
Mr Aliu stated that the Karmo District Market will promote the ease of doing business by attracting investors and expanding economic activities for sustainable development.
