The Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, has urged the United Nations to reform its funding structure, advocating for a more balanced and truly multilateral system.
Kalu, leading Nigeria’s delegation at the Inter-Parliamentary Union, IPU meeting in New York, emphasized the need for an all-inclusive funding mechanism to reduce the undue influence of major donors.
“Currently, the UN relies heavily on a few major donor countries, allowing them to dictate priorities and undermine the principles of multilateralism”.
Kalu proposed expanding the funding participation scope to include a broader range of nations, promoting more equitable decision-making and facilitating greater cooperation in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs.
Kalu also proposed amendments to the UN Charter, including the inclusion of “prosperity” in the theme of the upcoming 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments.
He emphasized the essential role of economic and social well-being in creating an environment conducive to lasting peace and justice.
Additionally, Kalu called for the amendment of Article 108 of the UN Charter to secure permanent seats for Africa on the UN Security Council.
He stressed the need for a more inclusive and representative global governance framework.
