NICO Seeks Collaboration With NYSC

todayJanuary 30, 2025

Background

In efforts to promote Nigerian Indigenous Languages among the youths, the National Institute for Cultural Orientation, NICO, has called for more collaboration with the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.

Speaking during the commencement of another round of four weeks training of Nigerian Indigenous Languages Programme for Corps Members at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja, the Executive Secretary of NICO, Otunba Biodun Ajiboye said the training is taking place simultaneously in all NYSC Orientation Camps across the country.

Otunba Biodun Ajiboye who was represented by an Assistant Cultural Officer in NICO, Mrs Chinye Chibuogwu stated that the past edition of the programme had yielded positive results among Corps Members.

Otunba Ajiboye while reiterating the determination of NICO in safeguarding Nigerian languages from going into extinction reminded NYSC Management of the need to establish NICO Indigenous Language Clubs to sustain the successes recorded so far through the free four weeks training over the years.

In a remark, the FCT NYSC Coordinator, Winifred Shokpeka commended NICO for the four weeks free Language training programme adding that the move would assist Corps Members in learning the language of their host communities in Abuja.

Some of the Corps Members also described the training as a welcomed development as it would provide them the opportunity to learn another Nigerian language outside their mother tongue.
