The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Abbas Tajudeen, has decried the impact of insecurity on the country’s agricultural sector, citing a decline in productivity, displacement of farmers, and poor yields.
Speaking at a forum in Abuja, Dr Abbas who emphasized that food security is a fundamental right and not a privilege attributed the decline in agricultural productivity to factors such as insecurity, rural-urban migration, dependence on oil, and climate change.
The speaker expressed concern over the “quick-money syndrome” among young Nigerians, who are increasingly shunning farming for urban opportunities,
stressing the need for a national rebirth to redirect the minds of youths towards hard work, focus, and consistency.
The Speaker noted that the 10th House of Representatives is prioritizing economic diversification and agricultural development, highlighting the parliament’s commitment to enacting policies that support farmers with subsidies, access to credit, and modern farming techniques.
He called on the private sector to invest in agriculture, citing the 2025 budget’s allocation to the agricultural sector as a step towards addressing critical challenges.
