Appropriation, Tax Reform Bills Priority Of HOR In 2025- Speaker

Background

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Abbas Tajudeen, says the 2025 Appropriation and the Tax Reform Bills presently before the National Assembly are part of the priorities of the federal parliament in 2025.

Dr Abbas in his welcome address address at plenary as the national Assembly resumed from the Christmas and new year recess emphasized the importance of passing the 2025 Appropriation Bill and the Tax Reform Bills, aimed to broaden the tax base, improve compliance, and reduce dependency on external borrowing.

Speaking on behalf of his Deputy, Benjamin Kalu, Dr Abbas noted that the House would ensure that these reforms are equitable and considerate of the needs of all Nigerians, particularly the most vulnerable.

The Speaker also highlighted the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution, which will address structural, systemic, and foundational issues in the polity.

According to him, the Constitutional Review Committee has made significant progress, with extensive consultations and a rigorous review of over 350 memoranda.

He also noted that the House is committed to advancing legislative framework that addresses critical national issues, including gender inequality, electoral reform, and energy infrastructure.

“These initiatives aim to promote equal rights and opportunities for women and girls, strengthen the electoral process, and develop sustainable energy solutions to power Nigeria’s economic growth”.

The Speaker emphasized the importance of promoting accountability, transparency, and responsiveness in governance as
the House will continue to engage with the public through initiatives like the Open Parliament and the “State of the House” live chats.

Meanwhile, as Nigeria observes the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the Speaker has urged citizens to honor the sacrifices of the fallen heroes and the commitment of service members noting that the House will continue to champion their welfare and ensure their contributions are recognized and supported.

He also urged lawmakers to renew their commitment to the principles of service, equity, and progress, emphasizing that Nigerians have legitimate expectations for a safer, more prosperous nation.
