Non-kinetic Strategies Can Deescalate Security Crises- Speaker

todayDecember 17, 2024

Background

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Abbas Tajudeen, says non-kinetic strategies can effectively deescalate the country’s security crises.

Dr. Abbas made the remarks in his keynote address at a workshop for security-Based Committees on the non-kinetic strategies to combat insecurity and terrorism in Nigeria.

The workshop was organized by the House in collaboration with a German Organization, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung to critically analyse Non-Kinetic strategies for tackling Nigeria’s security challenges.

Dr Abbas emphasized the need for Non-Kinetic measures in addressing the security challenges in the country, citing Rwanda and Kenya where Non-Kinetic strategies have been successful.

According to the Speaker, social and economic inequalities are key factors contributing to security challenges.

The Speaker emphasized the importance of, dialogue, economic empowerment, psychological interventions, and community-based initiatives in creating sustainable peace.

He also pointed to the significant financial commitment to security, with over $16 billion allocated to defence between 2008 and 2018, and N3.25 trillion allocated in 2024.

Dr. Abbas noted that these resources could be more prudently invested in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

The Resident Representative of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Marija Peran, stressed that poverty, unemployment, and inequality contribute significantly to insecurity.

Ms. Peran called for legislative interventions, improved access to quality education, and citizen sensitization to foster peaceful coexistence while emphasizing the need to strengthen institutions to promote transparency and accountability.
