Five members of the House of Representatives have defected from their Political Parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Speaker, Dr Abbas Tajudeen announced the defection on the floor of the House saying that Four of the defected members are from the Labour Party, LP, while one member is from the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
The defected members cited alignment of APC’s ideologies with their own as well as fractional division and crises within their previous parties.
Among the defected members is the daughter of a former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, Erthiatake Ibori-Suenu.
Others are Tochukwu
Okere from Imo State, Mathew Donatus, Kaduna State, Akiba Bassey from Cross Rivers and Esosa Iyawe, Edo State.
Responding to the defection, the minority whip, Ali Isah JC, called on the speaker to declare the seats of the defected opposition lawmakers vacant in line with Section 68(1) of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended).
However, the speaker countered that Isah failed to quote the entire section to justify his request.
