The House of Representatives has urged the federal government to investigate the recent surge in boat accidents across the country, resulting in significant loss of lives and property.
The call to action follows the adoption of a motion titled “Need to investigate the incessant boat mishaps in Nigeria’s waterways.” sponsored by Unyime Idem of Akwa Ibom State, who highlighted the need for improved maritime safety measures.
According to Idem, the recent Kogi boat mishap, which occurred on Nov. 29, resulted in the death of at least 54 people, with many more still unaccounted for.
This incident marks the third passenger boat accident in Nigeria within a span of just 60 days.
Idem attributed the frequent boat accidents to inadequate boat maintenance, poor design, overloading, and a lack of essential safety equipment and emergency response plans.
He also emphasized the need for stricter regulatory enforcement and better training for boat operators.
In adopting the motion, the House urged the federal government to conduct a thorough investigation into the recent boat mishaps and provide recommendations for improving maritime safety.
Additionally, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and the National Inland Waterways Authority have been directed to enforce safety regulations and ensure compliance with international maritime standards.
