House Launches Investigation Into Infractions In 3 Polytechnics

todayNovember 26, 2024

Background

The House of Representatives Committee on Polytechnics and other Higher Technical Education has launched an investigation into alleged financial and administrative infractions at three federal polytechnics.

The committee Chaired by Fuad Laguda, summoned the rectors and management staff of Federal Polytechnic Mubi, Adamawa State, Federal Polytechnic Monguno, Borno State, and Federal Polytechnic Damaturu, Yobe State, to appear before it and render accounts of their budget performances.

However, the committee discovered various infractions, including abuse of federal character in employment, extra-budgetary spending, and recurring abandoned and uncompleted projects.

The committee also criticized Federal Polytechnic Damaturu for using insecurity as an excuse for financial malfeasance and abuse of federal character in employment..

While reacting to the allegations, the Acting Rector of Federal Polytechnic Damaturu, Dr. Ibrahim Babale Gashua, who attributed the institution’s low internally generated revenue to the insecurity challenges facing the state explained that the institution had to reduce its tuition fees to encourage students to enroll, despite the security challenges.

Similarly, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic Monguno, Prof. Garba Mohd, attributed the institution’s employment imbalance to the peculiar security challenges facing the institution.
