Nasarawa Amazons Reign Supreme As 2024 BOWFT Champions

Nasarawa Amazons emerged as the champions of the 2024 Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament (BOWFT), defeating Bayelsa Queens in a thrilling penalty shootout.

After a goalless draw in regulation time, the match was decided by penalties, with Nasarawa Amazons prevailing 6-5 in a sudden-death shootout.

This victory marked Nasarawa Amazons’ first BOWFT title and continued the trend of different teams winning each edition of the tournament.

Bayelsa Queens won the inaugural title in 2021, followed by FC Robo Queens in 2022, and Edo Queens in 2023.

Edo Queens finished third in this year’s tournament, defeating Fortress Ladies 4-2 in the third-place match.

In the post match interview, Winning Coach Christopher Danjuma expressed his pleasure as Champions of the competition

“The feeling is indescribable, to finally win something after numerous attempts. We’ve been trying after coming close on different occasions.

And as for penalties? “We have been practicing penalty kicks after every training sessions because we’ve been unlucky with penalties in the last few seasons”

Meanwhile, Coach Whyte Ogbonda whose team emerged second after the penalty kick loss had these to say.

“Coach White Ogbonda both teams gave a good account of themselves but at the end of the day, Nasarawa Amazons won.

It did not go as he planned but I amproud of the way my girls played well by not conceding any goal.”

He further added that fatigue played a huge factor in his team’s inability to find the back of the net in the finals.

“My players were fatigued after playing six matches in 10 days, but overall they did very well and played to instructions.”

Earlier in the day, Host team Edo Queens defeated Heartland Queens of Owerri 4-2 to clinch third place and a cash reward of N5,000,000 (Five Million Naira.

The Prosperity Girls won second place in the competition and received a reward of N7,000,000 (Seven Million Naira).

While the Amazons won the competition and received a whopping N10,000,000 (Ten Million Naira).

With this latest success, Nasarawa Amazons further cemented their reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading women’s football teams.
