The Federal Government has approved free conversion of ten thousand commercial vehicles operating in the federal capital territory to Compressed Natural Gas, CNG

This is part of measures by the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative to ameliorate the effect of high cost of transport fare in the territory.

Head of Technical of one of the approved Conversion Centers n Katampe, Abuja, Mr Saad Halilu Saad said most of the commercial drivers are not making use of the gesture provided by the federal government.

According to him, vehicles converted are safe, as the CNG has no negative effect on vehicles.

Speaking with newsmen at another conversion center Along Airport Road Abuja, a Transport Union Leader, Alhaji Shehu Shugaba commended the federal government’s initiative, adding that the conversion from petrol engine to CNG would reduce cost of transport in the territory.

Alhaji Shugaba, who is also the president of Painted Abuja Taxis, said transport union leaders have commenced sensitization at approved motor parks on the need for commercial drivers to embrace the initiative.

Accoerding to Alhaji Shugaba, any union member that refuses to convert their vehicles now would miss the opportunity when the free conversion ends.

He urged commercial drivers to visit any of the seven free conversion centres .

Alhaji Shugaba, however, appealed to the federal government to increase the number of CNG gas stations in Abuja as the number of cars on CNG are increasing daily.

According to him, those who have converted their vehicles now run their cars on six thousand naira worth of CNG as against twenty-five thousand naira worth of petrol daily.
