An environmental expert has called for immediate action to avert the threat of flooding in the country.

Professor Benjamin Gurmamu of the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, Modibbo Adama University (MAU) Yola made the call during a Radio Nigeria programme, ‘You and your Environment’.

Professor Gurmamu emphasized the importance of adhering to early warning systems, stressing that timely responses would help mitigate the devastating impact of flooding.

He further urged the government to strengthen policies designed to address flood risks and ensure prompt intervention.

Prof.Gurmamu also highlighted the need for accountability, suggested that individuals who refuse to vacate flood-prone areas should face penalties.

He called on the government and relevant agencies to provide suitable accommodations for flood victims to encourage compliance with relocation orders.

On other environmental issues, Gurmamu advocated embracing the monthly sanitation program reintroduced by the state government.

Addressing broader environmental concerns, professor Gurmamu stressed that adopting the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)would help reduce emissions and combat climate change.

He also urged farmers to embrace organic farming to protect the planet from further degradation.

The call comes at a time when many communities in Adamawa state and Nigeria are grappling with the increasing frequency and intensity of floods, alongside the global push for environmental preservation.
