Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has pledged support for the National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC), expressing concerns over its meager annual budget of N250 million.
During an interactive session with NSCC management in Abuja, Dr Abbas acknowledged the centre’s significant mandate and promised to work towards increasing its budget in 2025.
He emphasized the need for special attention to senior citizens, particularly in healthcare and transportation.
The speaker tasked the Committee on Disability Matters to collaborate with the NSCC to develop a bill providing concessions for elderly citizens.
The Speaker also criticized Nigeria’s pension system, describing monthly payouts of N10,000 to N30,000 as “depressing” and “disappointing.”
He expressed willingness to collaborate with the NSCC to improve the pension scheme.
Director-General of the NSCC, Dr. Emem Omokaro, appreciated the Speaker’s support and highlighted the centre’s challenges despite its overwhelming mandate.
She requested increased budgetary provisions and offices across the country to better serve senior citizens.
