Members of the House of Representatives have condemned Libya’s maltreatment of the Super Eagles, demanding the federal government summon the Libyan Ambassador to explain the circumstances.

The team was held hostage for 14 hours without basic necessities like water after their aircraft was diverted to a smaller airport.

In a resolution following a motion of urgent matter of importance, Sponsored by the chairman House Committee on Sports Kabiru Ahmadu, the house directed the Nigeria Football Federation to make an official complaint to the Confederation of African Football, CAF, and the Federation of international Football Association on the inhuman treatment.

Moving his motion, Mr Ahmadu reminded the house that the Senior national team was supposed to play the return leg of the nation’s Cup qualifier after the first leg in Uyo.

The House condemned in strong terms the action of the Libyan authorities while appreciating the patriotism of members of the Super Eagles.

He also said the Super Eagle’s contingent included some members of the House led by the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Sports and the Deputy Governor of Edo state, Comrade Phillip Shuaibu.

He lamented that the players and officials were diverted by the Libyan authorities to an almost abandoned airport which is reserved for emergency landing, without basic facilities and subjected to inhumane treatment without food or water while being heavily guided.

He said as a result of the action, the players were unable to get their hotel in Benghazi, adding that the action should be condemned by all.

Contributing to the motion, Chris Nkwonta described the action as an embarrassment not only to Nigeria but to the entire continent of Africa and should be investigated.

Adopting the Motion, the house referred the matter to the committees on sports and foreign affairs.
