A bill to establish the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages scaled through its first reading in the House of Representatives.

Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight others, the legislation aims to promote the learning and advancement of Nigerian languages and cultures through higher education.

The proposed university seeks to develop and offer academic and professional programs in Nigerian languages, producing socially mature individuals with the capacity to communicate, understand, and use Nigerian languages for national development.

Additionally, it will conduct research and participate in outreach programs, provide language services and consultancy, and facilitate knowledge and skill acquisition in Nigerian languages.

The President will serve as the visitor to the university, with the power to conduct visits and remove council members, except the pro-chancellor and vice-chancellor, on grounds of misconduct or inability to perform their duties.

The university will also have the power to award diplomas, first degrees, and higher degrees and establish relationships with other national institutions involved in Nigerian language training and research.
