The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, FCT Council has decried effects of the harsh economy being experienced by Nigerians.

This is contained in a communique issued at the end of the council’s Congress over the weekend in Abuja.

It unequivocally frowned at the recent hike of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, leading to escalation of essential commodities that have gone beyond the reach of ordinary Nigerians.

The Congress expressed deep concern on the rise of tuition fees as many parents are now unable to keep their children in schools and seek affordable alternatives.

It warns that failure to take concrete action will lead to a growing number of out-of-school children.

The communique also urges security agencies, especially the Nigeria Police, to quickly put measures in place towards combating the scourge of insecurity, particularly the notorious ‘one-chance’ crimes which is on the increase in the territory.

It noted with dismay the annual flooding in some areas of the Federal Capital Territory, which has wreaked havoc, claiming lives, destroying property worth billions of naira, and leaving countless residents homeless.

To this end, it calls on the government to alleviate the suffering of victims and put up measures to avert future occurrence as well as take urgent sustainable action to cushion the hardship in the land.
