The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations, Sulaiman Abubakar Gumi, has reiterated that safety in the Nigerian electricity sector is non-negotiable.

Speaking at a briefing to present the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry Safety Conference, Gumi acknowledged that despite government efforts, safety issues persist, including vandalism, theft, and sub-standard electrical materials.

He emphasized the need for strengthened compliance and enforcement of laws and policies to enhance safety standards and regulations.

“The upcoming conference aims to bring together stakeholders to assess opportunities, prospects, and challenges in the sector, with the goal of developing a comprehensive policy document to strengthen oversight and investigative responsibilities” he said

Gumi highlighted the conference’s importance in addressing challenges such as sub-standard electrical materials, quackery, vandalism, theft, and false declarations.

He also stressed the need for synergy among stakeholders to tackle these issues and ensure safe, secure, and quality electricity service delivery.

The conference is expected to provide opportunities for training and capacity building, enhancing the ability of professionals to apply safety standards and regulations in electricity installations.
