The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee has ordered the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to remit N3.6 billion to the federal government’s Consolidated Revenue Fund, CRF.

This follows a petition by the Fiscal Responsibility Commission, which accused JAMB of failing to remit its operating surplus.

The Committee, chaired by Bamidele Salam, directed JAMB to pay the amount within 30 days and provide evidence of remittance.

The Committee also slammed JAMB for ignoring letters from the Fiscal Responsibility Commission regarding its liabilities.

JAMB’s Director of Finance and Administration, Mr. Mufutau Bello, explained that the difference in remittance figures was due to a disagreement over the percentage of revenue to be remitted.

He stated that JAMB had been remitting 25% of its revenue, as conceded by the Accountant General, but the Fiscal Responsibility Commission was demanding 50%.

The Fiscal Responsibility Commission’s representative, Mr. Bello Aliyu, cited the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which requires partially funded agencies like JAMB to remit 50% of their gross Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and limit their annual budgetary expenditure to not more than 50% of their IGR.

The Committee Chairman emphasized that remittances are not subject to personal interpretation and must be based on law or regulation.

The Committee unanimously ordered JAMB to pay the demanded amount and provide evidence of remittance within 30 days.
