The Government of Niger State has disbursed N25 billion to settle 21 years of outstanding pensions and gratuities owed to retirees.

A statement in Abuja issued by the State Governor, Umaru Bago, says this significant payment demonstrates his commitment to the welfare of retired civil servants.

According to the statement, in addition to resolving these long-standing arrears, the state government also paid a N20,000 wage award to civil servants across the board for the second time in two months.

Furthermore, the government is addressing all outstanding leave grants that have been pending since 2018.

“This move is a substantial step towards alleviating the financial burden on retirees, some of whom have not received their pensions for over nine years, resulting in a considerable backlog.”

“The current administration is dedicated to ensuring that pension payments are made promptly moving forward, to prevent similar situations in the future,” the statement says.

Governor Umaru Bago, therefore, issues a stern warning against any attempt to alter the serial numbers and files of beneficiaries, stating that anyone found guilty of such will face severe consequences.

“The payment process is scheduled to continue in batches, commencing with retirees from the local government areas,” the statement adds.
