In a bid to address some of the challenges in technical colleges, the federal government is to review its operational services to meet international best practices.
The Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, made this known at a stakeholders meeting with Principals of Federal Technical Colleges in Abuja.
Prof Tahir, who stressed the need for capacity building and institutional strengthening, expressed worry over the combination of technical with science, thus the need for review.
“The technical colleges will be a very attractive institution for people to go, but the information we have is not the case. At what stage did the technical college become science and technical. They were supposed to be Federal Government Technical Schools. So at what stage did we smuggle in science? I don’t understand. We know that science is very key to everything we are doing, but that is not the agenda for this institution. Those who want to do science programs should go to regular colleges and continue their programs there. Students who find themselves in technical colleges go purely for these technically specialized skills and trainings, “he said.
Prof Tahir Mamman also expressed optimism that the interface would enhance quality technical education aimed at increasing employability and entrepreneurship development.
The minister, however, reiterated the commitment of the ministry in training and retraining of both teachers and students, especially in skills acquisition.
Earlier in his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Dr Nasir Sani Gwarzo, who enumerated some of the challenges being faced in the colleges, called for collective efforts and strategies for improvement.
“We convened to discuss the pressing concerns facing our technical colleges, including inadequate infrastructure, outdated curricular, poor management, and insufficient funding. These challenges hinder the provision of quality education. ”
“Therefore, let us work together to revitalize our technical colleges and unlock the potential of our youths.”
