Onyeka Onwenu, a legendary Nigerian singer, actress, and broadcaster was renowned for her impactful contributions to the Nigerian music and entertainment industries.

Born on May 31, 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Ms. Onwenu’s remarkable career spanned several decades and left an indelible mark on Nigerian culture and society.

The late music Icon pursued her higher education in the United States, earning a degree in International Relations and Communication from Wellesley College, Massachusetts, and a master’s degree in Media Studies from The New School for Social Research in New York.

Onyeka Onwenu’s music career began in the early 1980s when she released her debut album, “For the Love of You.” Known as the “Elegant Stallion,” Onwenu captivated audiences with her soulful voice and powerful lyrics.

Her music often addressed social and political issues, earning her a reputation as a socially conscious artist. She seamlessly blended contemporary pop with traditional African sounds, creating a unique and captivating musical style. Some of her most popular songs include “One Love,” “You and I,” and “Ekwe.”

Her music not only entertained but also inspired change, as she used her platform to advocate for women’s rights, peace, and unity in Nigeria. Onwenu’s contributions to the music industry were recognized with numerous awards and accolades throughout her career.

In addition to her music, Onyeka Onwenu was a talented actress, appearing in various Nollywood films and television series. She brought her charisma and talent to the screen, delivering memorable performances in films such as “Half of a Yellow Sun,” “Lionheart,” and “Muna.” Her work in Nollywood further solidified her status as a versatile and influential figure in Nigerian entertainment.

She was also a respected broadcaster and journalist. She worked with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and produced and presented several acclaimed documentaries. Her investigative journalism shed light on critical issues affecting Nigerian society, including corruption and poverty. Her dedication to truth and justice resonated with audiences and further demonstrated her commitment to societal progress.

In 2013, Onwenu was appointed as the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), a role in which she championed women’s rights and empowerment. Her work with the NCWD highlighted her unwavering dedication to improving the lives of women and children in Nigeria.

Onyeka Onwenu passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72, after performing at the birthday party of a friend, Mrs. Stella Okoli and being hospitalized at a private Hospital in Lagos. Her death marked the end of an era, leaving a void in the Nigerian entertainment industry and beyond.

Onyeka Onwenu’s legacy is one of resilience, empowerment, and advocacy. She inspired generations of artists, activists, and individuals to use their voices for change and to stand up for what is right.

Her contributions to music, film, and social justice will continue to inspire and resonate as her legacy lives on for generations to come.
