To put an end to arbitrary Increase in the prices of goods in the country, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, says plans are underway to dissolve Market Unions and Associations nationwide.

The Acting Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC, Dr Adamu Abdullahi, who stated this at a forum in Abuja, said the move is also to guard against extorting consumers of their hard earned money.

According to the Acting Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC, surveys carried out across various markets in the country clearly prove that those illegal associations do not grant access to other marketers who are not members from coming to sell their goods and render services to consumers hence the need for urgent action to nip such acts in the bud.

Dr Abdullahi explained that FCCPC has put in place the necessary legal framework to tackle such market cartels hiding under the umbrella of associations to control prices of goods and services in the markets in the country.

Dr Adamu Abdullahi added that FCCPC is also battle ready to ensure a total compliance with food security, especially those supermarkets who still sell expired food items to unsuspecting consumers nationwide.

He stressed that the Commission is ready to carry out its mandate of advising the Federal Government by working out modalities to ensure all goods in the market space are fit for consumption.

Abdullahi, maintained that after several market surveys and several meetings with local government chairmen and market associations, the commission warned them to desist from compelling members to sell at their own stipulated prices or face the wrath of the law.

The FCCPC Boss reiterated the commission’s unwavering commitment towards regulating the goods supply chain into markets by some unpatriotic Nigerians to create an enabling environment for all traders.

Dr. Abdullahi, however, called for effective collaboration of all stakeholders in the drive to rid the markets of all illegal practices in line with global best practices
