In a move towards decentralization and grassroots development, the House of Representatives, led by the Speaker, Dr. Abbas Tajudeen has taken a significant step towards recognizing the importance of traditional institutions and granting autonomy to local governments in Nigeria.

During a panel discussion at the ongoing “Open Week” celebration marking the first anniversary of the 10th House, Tajudeen revealed the establishment of two special committees to drive this process.

He explained that the Committee on Traditional Institutions will focus on giving legal recognition to traditional institutions, while the Committee on States and Local Governments will work towards granting autonomy to local governments.

This development has been hailed as a major breakthrough by traditional rulers, led by the Etsu Nupe Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, who praised the initiative and urged the Assembly to re-establish the roles of traditional institutions in the constitution.

Similarly, the Nigerian Bar Association also commended the Speaker for championing the cause of traditional institutions and urged the Assembly to revisit legal and legislative encumbrances hindering their full potential

As the House moves towards empowering traditional institutions and local governments, panelists emphasized the need for job security and funding for traditional rulers to effectively carry out their roles.
