The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has identified terrorism, banditry, piracy, human trafficking, human rights abuses, climate change and bad governance as major obstacles to peace, security, and economic development in West Africa.

Speaking at the opening of the 2024 first ordinary session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja, Abbas emphasized the need for the regional parliament to continue its legislative functions with increased vigor and commitment to address these challenges.

While acknowledging the ECOWAS Parliament’s contributions to strengthening democracy, promoting human rights, and transparency, Abbas stressed that the sub-region still faces complex challenges that require unity of purpose, partnership, and cooperation among member states.

He assured that Nigeria is committed to defending democratic governance, the rule of law, and human rights in the sub-region, and pledged to support the ECOWAS Parliament in building legislative capacity and ensuring the implementation of resolutions.

The Speaker expressed optimism that West Africa’s rich human and material resources can be harnessed to achieve democracy, economic prosperity, peace, and political stability.
