An Abuja based NGO, Helpline Social Support Initiative, has organised an exhibition to showcase the various products produced by some widows that had gone through some skills acquisition training.
The founder of the NGO, Dr Jumai Ahmadu, staged the exhibition and charity sales to mark the 2024 International Widows Day with widows in the territory.
During the occasion, some of the products brought to the venue by over 200 Widows, were bought off as a way of galvanizing support for them to make quick sales.
Dr Ahmadu, represented by the Project Manager of the NGO, Mr Arome Onoja, explained that the event was put together to celebrate the talents and resilience of widows.
According to her, “the Helpline Social Support Initiative is committed to providing widows with the resources, support, and opportunities they need to thrive and participate fully in their communities.
“By purchasing their products and promoting their skills, we are not just investing in their future but also acknowledging their ability to contribute meaningfully to society.
“I commend all the widows who have participated in this event for their dedication, talent, and resilience. As we showcase the skills and creativity of widows, let us not only admire their craftsmanship but also recognize the crucial role they play in promoting peace and democracy within their communities. ”
“We believe that by empowering widows, we are not only promoting gender equality but also advancing the cause of peace, democracy, and social justice. ” Ahmadu said.
Janet Yilluk, an exhibitor of liquid soap, said the knowledge of liquid soap making acquired through the support of Helpline is yielding her some money to cater for her children.
Another exhibitor of weaved clothings, Hajara Mohammad testified that the skills obtained from the NGO after the demise of her husband have helped to keep her busy.
“Since I came to this Helpline Foundation I have been able to use this skills to train my children in school and also train other women. Before I joined Helpline, I had nothing doing but, they empowered me, and got me treads which I used to weave, from there I am able to feed my children, pay their school fees and take care of their needs”, Hajara said.
Another widow, Kande Malam told Journalists that she was able to begin her beni-seed snack business with the amount of money given to her by Helpline, adding that most widows have diversified into production of duve, liquid soap, air freshener, and even Garri making.
“We thank God for Dr Jumai for upholding widows, not only in Abuja, but up to Niger state, Nasarawa and even Kaduna state. May God continue to bless her with good health and long life.”
Three widows at the exhibition scene unanimously appealed for more support from the government and wealthy Nigerians to make the world a better place for them, especially the less privileged ones.
