The Wife of the Adamawa State Governor, Hajiya Lami Umaru Fintiri, has advocated collective responsibility to change cultural practices that oppress widows in
the state through the
office of the Nigerian first lady, Renewed Hope Initiative and Fresh Air Pro Life Empowerment Foundation.

She made this known during an event to commemorate this year’s International Widows Day in Yola.

International Widows Day, observed annually on June twenty-third, is a day designated by the United Nations to recognize and address the injustices faced by millions of widows and their dependents.

In light of this, the Nigerian first lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu and Hajiya Lami Umaru Fintiri believe it is crucial to support and amplify the voices of widows to help them overcome their challenges.

Hajiya Lami Fintiri emphasized that the culture of widowhood presents unique challenges that are deeply rooted in societal norms and traditions.

The governor’s wife also expressed gratitude to the Nigerian First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her unwavering support for widows nationwide.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Nedo Joeffery applauded the efforts of the state government in providing assistance to alleviate the sufferings of widows in the state.

She also called for a united effort to break the cycle of discrimination and marginalization that widows often face in society.

The items distributed include fifty bags of rice and cash to each local government in the state.

The theme for this year’s International Widows Day is “accelerating the achievement of gender equality.”
