The House of Representatives and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, have resolved to temporarily lift the ban on the sale and consumption of sachet alcoholic beverages.
This decision was reached after a meeting between the House Committee on NAFDAC and agency officials.
The ban was initially imposed due to concerns over drug abuse, particularly among young Nigerians.
However, the House of Representatives intervened, mandating its committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the ban.
At a Media Briefing in Abuja, Deputy House Spokesperson, Philip Agbese, said the temporary lifting of the ban is pending until manufacturers can adjust to the current economic reality.
Agbese emphasized that the decision was made in the interest of the masses and the nation’s mood, considering the current economic challenges.
Moving forward, the modalities for the removal of the ban are expected to be made public in July.
The lawmaker dismissed concerns about potential health risks, citing the importance of personal freedom and the mild health implications of consuming sachet drinks compared to other substances.
The decision was also influenced by concerns from low-income earners who felt their fundamental human rights were breached by the ban.
Agbese emphasized the need to allow people to make their own choices, just like they do with other products.
