The Chairman of the House of Representatives Press Corps, Comrade Grace Ike, has emphasized the importance of active citizen participation, accountability, transparency, and inclusiveness in governance as Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day.
In her message in Abuja, Comrade Grace Ike notes that June 12 holds a unique place in the hearts of Nigerians, symbolizing the country’s collective aspiration for freedom, justice, and equitable governance.
“The events of June 12, 1993, and the subsequent journey towards democratic rule underscores the resilience and determination of our people as this day reminds us of the sacrifices made to secure the democratic rights and liberties we enjoy today, “Comrade Ike said.
The Vice Chairman, Correspondent Chapel Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Chapter, praises the resilience and determination of Nigerians in the face of challenges and calls on them to reflect on the progress made and challenges ahead.
She urges them to work together towards a prosperous, just, and united Nigeria where every citizen can fully realize their potential and no man is oppressed.
Highlighting the critical role of the media in sustaining democracy, Comrade Ike emphasizes the importance of a free press in holding power accountable and ensuring that the voices of the people are heard.
She reaffirms the Press Corps’ commitment to free speech, unbiased reporting, and holding power accountable, urging all stakeholders to renew their dedication to democratic ideals.
Comrade Ike urges all Nigerians to remember the significance of June 12 as a call to action for the continued advancement of democratic values and principles.
“Let us renew our commitment to democratic ideals and work together towards a prosperous, just, and united Nigeria,” Comrade Ike said.
