Transportation : FRSC Moves To Enhance Use Of Bicycles

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has called on relevant authorities to create an enabling environment that will enhance the use of bicycles in the country.

Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed who made the call while addressing newsmen in commemoration of the Sixth World Bicycle Day in Abuja, said investment that promotes Car-Centric development must be changed to encourage walking and cycling.

Shehu Mohammed maintained that FRSC has reviewed the Nigeria Highway Code to reflect a new, safe and sustainable transport system as witnessed across the world.

According to him, the bicycle advocacy has been adequately captured in the Nigerian Road Safety Strategy 11 2021 to 2030 as approved by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The FRSC Boss however appealed to the motoring public to treat cyclists with the same precautions and respect accorded any other vehicle on the road.

He assured that FRSC would continue to enforce the provisions of the law including the protection of the rights of cyclists.

Earlier, the director general Nigeria Building and Road Research Institute, Professor Samson Duna said the agency was ready to provide technical support that would assist in incorporating the use of the bicycle component in road infrastructure.

Professor Samson Duna commended the FRSC for championing the course of cyclists to enhance transportation system in the country.

Vice President, African Urban Cycling Organization, Emmanuel John called on the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike to include cycling in the light rails and other public transport as well as cycle parks in all rail and bus terminals.

The FRSC Corps Marshal later rode a bicycle with pupils of a private primary to symbolise the commencement of activities to mark this year’s World Bicycle Day with the theme: Cycling as a Tool for Urban Freedom.
