In a significant boost to Nigeria’s maritime capabilities, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commissioned three warships and two helicopters at the Naval Dockyard Limited in Lagos.

This landmark event also included the inauguration of the Nigerian Navy International Maritime Conference (IMC) 2024 and the flag-off of a regional maritime exercise.

President Tinubu, in his address delivered by Vice President Shettima, praised the Nigerian Navy and its Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, for their dedication to creating a secure maritime environment.

He highlighted Vice Admiral Ogalla’s successful anti-crude oil theft operations, which significantly increased Nigeria’s oil production, and referred to the Navy as the lifeguards of Nigeria’s Maritime Environment.

The Vice President also officially commenced the Regional Maritime Exercise REMEX, tagged “ABO-OKUN,” from the Helo-Deck of NNS KADA.

Participating in the exercise are naval forces from Brazil, Cameroon, China, and Nigeria, featuring 11 Nigerian Navy ships and two helicopters.

The opening day of the IMC 2024 drew delegates from countries including the United States, South Korea, France, China, the United Kingdom, Spain, Russia, Ghana, Cameroon, Senegal, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, and Benin.

The conference, themed “Promoting the Blue Economy in Africa through International Cooperation on Maritime Security,” aims to enhance international collaboration and maximize the benefits of the Blue Economy for economic growth.

Celebrating its 68th anniversary, the Nigerian Navy, under the leadership of Vice Admiral Ogalla and the guidance of President Tinubu, has demonstrated a robust state of operational readiness and commitment to maritime security.

The newly commissioned naval assets comprise the NNS OCHUZOR, a 35-meter hydrographic survey vessel; NNS CHALAWA and NNS ZUR, both 32-meter seaward defense boats; and two helicopters, NN 412 and NN 414.

These additions are expected to enhance the Nigerian Navy’s operational readiness and maritime security efforts.
