The House of Representatives has resolved to replace the annual rent payment system in the Federal Capital Territory FCT, with a monthly system.
This was sequel to the adoption of a motion sponsored by a member from Akwa-Ibom, Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo during plenary in Abuja
In his lead debate, Ukpong-Udo explained that the motion sought to address the challenges faced by tenants in the FCT, who are often required to pay a minimum of one year’s rent, and sometimes up to two years, upfront.
He argued that this system is unfair and burdensome for working-class families, and that a monthly rent payment system would be more inclusive and affordable.
“Nigeria is ripe for an inclusive rental system that reduces housing burden on working-class families which will offer affordable monthly rentals for low- and middle-income earners,” he said.
According to him, the committee will collaborate with stakeholders in the real estate sector to work out a modality for monthly rent payments and review the sector to recommend effective policies to regulate the activities of landlords.
Mr Ukpong-Udo urged the government to intervene by building mass houses for civil servants.
“Government must come to the rescue of the residents and formulate policies that will regulate house rents and the activities of landlords in Abuja.
“There is a need to build affordable houses for civil servants in Abuja to reduce the burden of paying exorbitant rent in Abuja,” the lawmaker said.
