HOR Clears Air On Cyber Security Levy

todayMay 16, 2024

Background

The House of Representatives has issued a clarification that the recently introduced cyber security levy is specifically targeted at companies operating in the cyber space, and not individual Nigerians.

These companies include, GSM Service providers and all telecommunication companies; internet service providers, Banks and other financial institutions, insurance companies, and the Nigerian stock exchange.

This clarification was made during plenary, following the adoption of a motion by Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, which addressed the implementation of the cyber security levy.

Chinda emphasized that media reports claiming the House had halted the implementation of the levy were inaccurate.

He maintained that the motion passed by the House last week explicitly stated that the levy was not intended for individuals.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, reaffirmed that the House supports the implementation of the cyber security levy, but stressed that it must adhere to the provisions of the Cyber Security Act.

“This clarification aims to alleviate any confusion or concerns among Nigerians, ensuring that the levy is applied fairly and in accordance with the law.

“The House of Representatives remains committed to promoting national security and economic growth through effective legislation and oversight,” he added.
