Allegations Of Bribery By Binance False- Reps

todayMay 14, 2024

Background

The House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes has dismissed allegations of bribery by Binance, describing them as “false, fabricated, and blackmail.”

At a media conference in Abuja, the Committee Chairman, Ginger Obinna Onwusibe stated that the allegations are a desperate attempt to distract them from the serious criminal allegations against Binance.

According to the Committee, Binance’s CEO, Richard Teng, made the allegations in a blog post on May 7, 2024, claiming that the Committee demanded a significant payment in cryptocurrency to drop investigations into Binance’s activities in Nigeria.

However, the Committee maintains that the allegations are unfounded and designed to shift attention away from the investigations into the company’s fraudulent activities.

The Committee has been investigating Binance since December 2023, following petitions from several civil society organizations and individuals alleging financial and economic crimes, including tax evasion, money laundering, and terrorism financing.

Despite several invitations, Binance has failed to appear before the committee, instead sending its counsel.

Onwusibe emphasized that the committee will not be swayed by Binance’s diversionary tactics and will continue to investigate the company’s criminal activities.

He assured Nigerians of the committee’s integrity, transparency, and competence in handling the investigation and that the committee is committed to getting to the bottom of the matter.

“Notably, Binance’s founder, Changpeng Zhao, was recently sentenced to four months in prison in the United States for money laundering and unlicensed money transmitting.

“The committee’s investigation into Binance’s activities is ongoing, and it remains committed to uncovering the truth” he said.
