An executive bill advocating an increase in the salaries of judicial officers has passed its second reading in the Senate.
The proposed Bill by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, promises significant financial adjustments within the country’s judiciary.
If approved, the proposed plan would see Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kayode Ariwoola, receive an annual salary amounting to N57.889 million, in addition to a generous severance package of N80.775 million upon retirement.
Beyond the CJN, the proposed salary increments would be extended to other judicial officers from the Supreme Court down to Magistrates.
Effective from January 1st, 2024, these adjustments are poised to significantly impact the financial landscape of the country’s judiciary.
Supporters of the bill, primarily lawmakers, argued that the proposed salary increase is long overdue and imperative for attracting and retaining top legal talent within the judiciary. They asserted that offering competitive remuneration is crucial for upholding the integrity and efficacy of the judicial system.
