HOR Calls For More Security Presence In Schools

todayMay 8, 2024

Background

The House of Representatives has called for the presence of security agents across Schools of the Federation to avert abduction of School Children which has become a recurrent decimal in many Nigerian Schools.

This was sequel to the adoption of a motion of urgent matter of public importance by member representing
Orhionmwon Uhunmwode
Federal Constituency of Edo State, Dr. Billy Osawaru, described as worrisome the continual kidnap and destruction of lives and property across schools in the country.

The Lawmaker who noted that policemen are not guarding most of the schools despite frequent attacks on Schools across the country explained that If no drastic measure is taken to curb the escalating insecurity situation in the country and in the schools, the entire schools may end up being shut down due to the activities of these miscreants and hoodlums.

According to him, despite the efforts of Nigerian security agencies, the miscreants appear to be reinforced and have perpetuated much destruction in most schools and have made lives extremely difficult for majority of the schoolchildren and staff who now live under perpetual fear and threat to their lives.

Adopting the motion, the House mandated the House Committees on Army, Airforce, Navy, Police Affairs and Defence to interface with all security Chiefs to identify how best to secure the schools and proffer immediate lasting solutions to the security challenges in the country.

The House also called on Nigerian clerics, Traditional Rulers, the National Orientation Agency and Civil Society Organisations to contribute towards value re-orientation and social re-awakening especially to the out of school children still living in fear.
