In a daring operation, the Nigerian Navy (NN) personnel stationed at Naval Security Station (NSS) 023, along the Cawthorne Channel in Rivers State, rescued over 250 passengers from a capsized boat.

According to a statement by the Director Naval Information, Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu the ill-fated vessel, named MV PRECIOUS EMMANUEL, which embarked from the Sangana area market in Bayelsa State, en route Rivers State encountered treacherous waters, and collided with a wreck that caused it to overturn.

The statement explains that despite being a three-deck wooden vessel, commonly known as the “Large Cotonou Boat,” it lacked essential safety equipment, and none of the passengers were wearing life jackets.

It further notes that the swift and professional response of the NN personnel played a pivotal role in ensuring that no lives were lost.

Accordingly this operation exemplifies the dedication of the NN to maintaining a safe and secure maritime environment, as outlined in the Strategic Directive of Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff.

Furthermore, the NN underscores the critical importance of equipping local maritime operators with essential safety gear such as life jackets and life buoys.

The NN maintains that provision and proper utilization of such equipment are paramount in ensuring the safety of individuals at sea.

The Navy reassures the public of its unwavering commitment to securing Nigeria’s maritime space, from the inland waters to the outermost limits of the Exclusive Economic Zone, to facilitate the growth of legitimate businesses.
