The House of Representatives has emphasized the need for terminal operators at the Nation’s sea ports to collaborate with relevant government agencies to enhance revenue generation in the maritime sector.
In a meeting held in Abuja, Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Ports and Harbour, Nnolim Nnaji, underscored the importance of boosting the internally generated revenue IGR, of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, highlighting government’s commitment to revitalizing ports with an investment exceeding one billion dollars.
He also maintained that all revenue leakages must be blocked.
The Lawmaker who is representing Nkanu East/West Federal Constituency of Enugu State noted that the nation could no longer rely on oil as the major source of revenue emphasizing the pivotal role of the maritime sector, particularly the NPA, in driving revenue for the country’s infrastructure development.
During the engagement, the committee requested crucial documents from terminal operators to evaluate their compliance with the memorandum of understanding MOU, signed with the NPA.
These documents include agreements with NPA, terminal development plans, equipment inventory, proof of fee and rent remittances, asset insurance, infrastructure investments, and cargo handling data.
