The diplomatic Community has called for global responsibility to address all forms of crises and disputes that might degenerate into the waste of lives and property.
At the 30th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, in Abuja, tagged Kwibuka30: Rwanda Remembers, Unites, and Renews,
The event is to honor the memory of over one million victims brutally murdered in 100 days in 1994 and celebrates the resilience of the Rwandan people.
Addressing the gathering, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, who was represented by a former Ambassador to Sudan, Safiu Olaniyan called for understanding among nations of the world.
He promised Nigeria’s commitment to rebuilding and uniting the Rwandan nation.
”Nigeria will work the journey with you, this is a call to action, we should stand against all forms of discrimination.”
”The horror of genocide should never be allowed to raise its ugly head again, disagreement is one of the contexts of this world, let us genuinely settle our differences and move on,” he added.
Narrating his experience, a retired Nigerian Navy admiral, Samuel Alade, noted that he witnessed the genocide while in Rwanda on Peace Keeping Mission.
He commended the leadership of Rwandans for uniting all peoples and tribes as well as rebuilding the country.
”Every citizen of Rwanda now sees him/herself as a Rwanda, how did Rwanda achieve this, in just a spate of time?“I commend the tenacity of purpose and the commitment of the Rwandans to make their nation an example of relevance,” he added.
The Rwandan High Commissioner to Nigeria, Christophe Bazivamo, who cautioned against igniting hatred and disunity, said there was a need to prevent the reoccurrence of the genocide.
”Men, women and children, mainly ethnic Tutsis also moderate Hutus, were killed in the murderous onslaught that saw families and friends turn against each other in one of the darkest episodes of the late 20th century.”
“On this Kwibuka 30, together, we can ensure that the memory of the victims becomes a powerful force for good, inspiring future generations to choose peace over hate, unity over division, and hope over despair.
According to him, “This can be achieved in different ways, including putting course lessons about the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in schools and the establishment of memory symbols in remembrance of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
”To educate the young and the next generation on the need to fight hate ideologies and stand against any form of discrimination and divisionism,” he added.
