Intensifying Fight Against Economic Saboteurs In Nig
When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took the oath of office on the 29th of May last year, he officially announced an end to fuel subsidy regime and promised to carry out reforms in all sectors.
The president rejigged the nation’s foreign exchange market and made other significant reforms.
These two major reforms though embarked on to bring prosperity to the nation have not been yielding immediate positive results.
This is not unconnected with the activities of some unscrupulous Nigerians who have continued to sabotage every sector of the economy.
The media are daily reporting the incidences of vandalism in the power and rail sector, round tripping of foreign exchange by influential Nigerians, smuggling through the nation’s borders, oil bunkering to mention but a few.
Recently, the General Manager, Public Affairs, Transmission Company of Nigeria, Mr Ndidi Mbah, issued a statement on the vandalism on its tower constructed along the 330kv Gwagwalada-Katampe transmission line.
He said the incident had reduced bulk power supply flexibility and the volume of power into Abuja, causing several areas in the federal capital territory to experience darkness.
Similarly, the Nigeria Customs service, Oyo-Osun command intercepted sacks of fake pharmaceutical drugs worth over one point eight billion naira.
Customs Area Comptroller disclosed this to newsmen during a news briefing at the command headquarters, Agodi Ibadan.
It is also saddening to note that some unpatriotic Nigerians go into the creeks where the petroleum pipelines pass through, puncture and siphon fuel for their personal enrichment.
In a stern warning to saboteurs, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris said the Federal Government would go after individuals sabotaging the nation’s economy.
Also, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, warned that they would no longer allow any act of economic sabotage such as vandalism of critical national assets or illegal mining by miscreants across the country.
In saving the country from economic collapse caused by saboteurs, the government should implement stricter regulations, increase transparency, and crackdown on corruption.
The government should also invest in infrastructure, promote diversification of the economy, and create conducive environment for businesses to thrive to dissuade saboteurs.
Furthermore, it is imperative to collaborate with international partners and foster a culture of accountability and good governance which are crucial in combating economic sabotage.
The National Orientation Agency should therefore intensify its campaigns on enlightening Nigerians on the dangers in sabotaging the nation’s economy.
Also, those sabotaging the nation’s economy should be sensitized and educated that their unpatriotic act is undermining the country’s quest for good roads, potable water, affordable healthcare and other basic necessities of life.
Subsequently, government should track down saboteurs and subject them to legal prosecution no matter how highly placed or connected they seem to be.
