Sports Minister Commends Nigerian Wrestlers At African Senior Wrestling Championship

The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh lauded Nigerian Wrestling Federation following the exceptional performance of Nigerian athletes at the ongoing African Senior Wrestling Championship in Alexandria, Egypt.

Nigerian wrestlers continued to showcase talent and determination, after securing a plethora of medals to continue their stellar form displayed at the African Games in Accra, Ghana.

After six gold medals and a number of silver and bronze medals at the African Games, the good run has not stopped.

Olympic silver medalist and Commonwealth champion Blessing Oborodudu defeated Osman Badran of Egypt 12-2 superiority decision to win her 14th African crown.

Meanwhile, returning to the competition after she had skipped last year’s championships Odunayo Adekuoroye outclassed Chaimaa Aouissi of Egypt by pin-fall to win her 8th African title. A win that ensure that Adekuoroye tops the 57kg rankings.

In a statement, Senator Enoh expressed profound admiration for the leadership of the Federation, as well as the exemplary dedication of the athletes and officials currently competing for honours in Egypt. He hailed their achievements as awe-inspiring and emphasized their significance in the annals of Nigerian sports history.

Senator Enoh was full of praise for the team led by coach Purity Akuh, as well as the Federation’s leadership.

“In dominating two continental events in two weeks, the Nigerian Wrestling team has demonstrated extraordinary dedication and unmatched abilities…

Their remarkable achievements not only bring pride to our nation but also serve as an inspiration to aspiring athletes across the country.

The Nigerian Wrestling Federation continues to shine as a beacon of excellence, and their triumphs on the continental stage make us all proud as Nigerians.”

Enoh emphasized the pivotal role of the Federation in showcasing Nigeria’s sporting prowess on the international stage, highlighting their contribution to the nation’s sporting legacy.

He extended his best wishes to the Nigerian wrestling team as they partake in other categories at the Championship.

Christianah Ogunsanya capitalized on her remarkable performance at the African Games by defeating Chahrazed Ayachi of Tunisia 10-0 superiority in 53kg to win gold.

Kolawale Esther showcased her prowess by overwhelming Farah Hussein of Egypt with a commanding 11-0 victory, clinching her second African senior title in the 62kg category.

Despite a gallant effort, Military world gold medalist Hannah Reuben secured the silver medal in the 76kg category after a hard-fought battle with Zainab Sghair.

On Tuesday will see other Nigerian Wrestlers such as African Games gold medalist Mercy Genesis and debutant Ashton Adeyemi Mutuwa among others take to the mat to fly the Nigerian flag.
