In response to the civil unrest that erupted at Wuse Market yesterday, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Benneth Igweh, personally led a team of police operatives to the scene, swiftly restoring order.
According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Command, Josephine Adeh, preliminary investigations revealed that the unrest stemmed from an incident involving Ibrahim Yahaya, 27, who was apprehended by operatives of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, AEPB Task Force.
It states that Yahaya was taken before a mobile court situated in Wuse Market, where he was convicted, but while trying to escape during his transfer to prison he was shot by armed corrections personnel.
The statement further explains that the incident incited anger among bystanders, resulting in the destruction of eight vehicles and ten shops.
It notes that the situation was brought under control through the collaborative efforts of the Federal Fire Service and other security agencies while the armed corrections personnel who shot Yahaya has been arrested and is in police custody.
The CP therefore urges residents to carry on with their lawful activities peacefully as measures are in place to maintain security.
