The Ministry of Interior has appealed for more budgetary allocation for optimal performance.
The minister, Olubunmi Tunji Ojo made the appeal at the 2024 budget defense before the joint committee on Interior.
Mr Ojo said that most correctional centers needed to be refurbished to take care of the inmates.
According to him some of the structures were built in the 60s hence the need for a modern structure in line with international best practice.
The minister stressed the need for implementation of the correctional service act since it is now on the concurrent list adding that 70 percent of inmates are state offenders.
The Chairman of the committee, Senator Adams Oshimohle said the committee is Committed to providing security for Nigerians.
He explained that the committee would also ensure that many issues in the ministry from prison congestion, pipeline vandalism, porous borders to fire outbreaks were curtailed for a more prosperous economy.
He said the committees’ work is to look at the ministry’s proposal and make provisions that are appropriate to making sure that it’s in line with the idea of the President
to achieve greater accountability and transparency.
