NLC, TUC Declarre Nationwide Strike

Background

The National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, have declared a nationwide strike effective next Tuesday, November 14, 2023.

Also, the two unions maintained that there will be national action on Imo State from Today Midnight.

The leadership of the two unions reached the resolution after an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting in Abuja.

They said the nationwide mobilisation of members commenced immediately.

The proposed strike by the Organized Labour was a reaction to the assault on NLC National President, Joe Ajaero last week in Imo State.

The Organised Labour had expressed widespread displeasure with the attack, accusing the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Mohammed Barde as the mastermind behind the arrest .

The Organised Labour gave the Federal Government a five-day ultimatum to replace the Police Commissioner, while blaming the attack on Ajaero on Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is running for re-election, but the governor has since stated that he had no hand in the attack on the labour leader.

The Organised Labour also demanded the arrest and prosecution of some of the governor’s aides, threatening a nationwide strike if their demands were not met.

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had redeployed Barde on Sunday for “neutrality sake” ahead of the November 11, 2023 governorship election in Imo State.
