FG Tasked On Good Governance, Peaceful Coexistence

todayOctober 22, 2023

Background

By Garry Ochigbo

Governments at all levels have been urged to come up with policies that will foster nation-building.

A Civil Society Organization and Pressure Group, One Nigeria Forum ONF, made the call at a forum in Abuja.

The National Chairman of One Nigeria Forum, Chief Sunnie Chukumele said the group with members from the six geopolitical zones has the objective of sensitizing political leaders to brace up for current economic realities in the interest of Nigerians.

He said Nigeria in the first republic was recorded as the fastest-growing economy of the world but expressed regret that subsequent administrations failed to consolidate on the achievement.

Chukumele, however, called on political leaders to translate the huge human and material resources into making Nigeria a wealthy industrialized nation instead of relying on aid, and loans that mortgaged the country’s future.

He appealed to lawmakers to key into President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda by diversifying into other sectors of the economy like agriculture, power, railway, and Airlines and revitalizing textile industries to tackle the high rate of unemployment.

In a keynote address, the chairman of the Forum, Alh. Majeed Dahiru urged leaders to see democracy as people-centered not government of the elite by giving up their numerous privileges in the interest of all Nigerians, especially the less privileged.

He however added that the forum will continue to fight against corruption and other social ills for a better Nigeria.

Earlier, a public affairs analyst Austen Maho who stressed that leadership failure and division along ethnic and tribal lines have been the major setback in Nigeria called on President Tinubu-led administration to address such challenges for nation building.

He however called on civil society organizations and well-meaning Nigerians to join in the fight against corruption through awareness campaigns and other sensitization programs to tackle the menace.
