As part of efforts to ensure self sufficiency in food production, members of the House of Representatives have raised the alarm on the dire state of ginger farming across the country.
To this end the lawmakers are urgently calling on the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to take immediate and decisive action to combat a destructive fungal disease plaguing ginger cultivation, particularly in Kaduna and other ginger-growing states.
This followed the adoption of the resolutions of a motion of urgent National importance sponsored by Amos Dan, from Kaduna State, at plenary.
Leading the debate, the lawmaker who emphasized the indispensable role of ginger farming in the nation’s agricultural landscape, underscored the critical need for swift intervention from the Ministry to halt the spread of this fungal menace.
He further stressed the need to provide affected farmers with superior ginger seedlings, as countless families in these regions depend heavily on ginger production for their livelihood.
Recognizing the significance of ginger to the nation’s agricultural sector, the Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, mandated the relevant House committees to ensure that the Ministry of Agriculture takes immediate action to confront this pressing issue.
