House Advocates Civil Service Reforms

The House of Representatives has called for reforms in the Civil Service.

The Lawmakers made the call during a special tribute to mark the nation’s 63rd Independence anniversary.

One of the Lawmakers from Katsina State, Mr. Sada Soli, observed that despite the progress the country has achieved, one of the issues that are affecting the country is poor public sector governance.

Mr Soli stated that the level of infectious corruption in the public sector is affecting the progress of the country and yet the government has failed to address the issues.

“Why did I say public sector? Our civil service today is not the civil service we knew in the 1960s where we had super permanent secretaries that would call ministers to order.

” This country has made a lot of progress over the years. We experience our challenges as a nation. Over the years we have struggled with almost the same issues, coming out of some and retiring into others and unfortunately going round and round the same circle.

For a member of Sokoto State Abdul Dasuki, a living wage for Nigerian workers in the shortest possible time is the reform that is needed.

Mrs Blessing Amadi from Rivers called for the implementation of the federal character principles to promote peaceful coexistence across the country.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu who presided over plenary stressed the need for tolerance and peaceful co-existence among Nigerians.

The Lawmakers also called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders to tackle the security challenges bedeviling the country.
