A Civil Rights Group has decried recent acts of violence and destruction perpetrated by individuals suspected to be soldiers in Umualumaku, Umueze, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area, Imo State.
The group, Human Rights Writers’ Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, noted that it was deeply saddened by the wanton destruction of property, including shops, relaxation centers and other businesses.
A statement from the Group explains that the reprisal attack, which followed the tragic killing of security personnel, is not only unjust but also a flagrant violation of rules of engagement for soldiers involved in internal security operations.
HURIWA therefore appealed that those responsible for these acts of violence be identified, apprehended, and brought to justice.
It emphasizes that no one should be above the law, and those who engage in unwholesome activities must face the consequences of their actions.
The group commended the Nigerian Army for denying any involvement in these destructive acts, and urged relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation to ascertain the true perpetrators.
The statement adds that the group condoles with the affected people and urged government and law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of the people in the affected community and make sure normalcy is returned in the area.
