Background

By Oduyemi Odumade

The House of Representives Adhoc Commitee investigating the failure of Federal Mass Transist Scheme has applauded the Lagos State Government for the construction and implementation of a seamless transportation system in the State.

The chairman of the ad hoc Committee, Mr Afam Victor Ogene, gave the commendation during a working visit to the State.

The Lawmaker who explained that the visit to the state was to engage the State Government and other private-sector transport companies to get first hand information on the success stories of the transport sector in the State says the Ad-hoc Committee’s findings with the diverse stakeholders was insightful.

At the meeting with the Lagos State Governor, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Femi Hamzat, the Lawmaker restated the Committee’s quest for sustainable solutions to Nigeria’s Mass Transit challenges.

Responding, the Deputy Governor, Mr Femi Hamzat, noted that the State Government was delighted that their efforts in mass transit were being recognized and applauded, even by an organ of government as important as the federal legislature.

Mr. Hamzat explained that the State Government had always been intentional in its investments in mass transportation, given the huge population and the increasing need for seamless movement across the state.

He therefore, appealed for the Federal Government’s support, partnership, and better synergy in addressing the challenges of the mass transit system in the State.

Apart from the recently commissioned mono rail in the state and the Blue Lines, Hamzat, who attributed the success stories of the state in the transportation sector to diligent planning, also revealed that the state will soon launch another phase of the scheme, referred to as the Red Lines, which has a higher mass transportation capacity than the Blue Lines.
